Sandwich Public Library

We partnered with Studio MLA on this 3.6 million dollar renovation of the Sandwich Library. The goal was to re-imagine the Library so it would be flexible and open, a setting with new technology and modern spaces; a library where people would want to meet up and collaborate as well as curl up with a good read.

The main room was re-designed with a new accessible circulation desk, and the stacks were lowered to create a brighter more open space; at the west end a Tech bar was added. Modern materials and colors were used to update the feel of the Library, and the stair down to the meeting rooms was highlighted with glass railings and a wood ceiling. The Children’s area was moved from the front of the building to where it would be more convenient to parking and bathrooms, and it gained a Storytime area looking out on the garden. Meeting rooms were improved and fitted with projection and audio equipment, and the handsome McKnight room was re-thought as a meeting/quiet study area, while the adjacent outdoor patio was updated with new flagstones and an accessible ramp. The historic wing, the original Sandwich Library of 1910, was given a more gracious entry, and carefully restored to house the Library’s significant Archives.
